Board Biographies
 

Amy Bogaard has a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and later became certified to teach Physics, Math, and Physical Education. She was a teacher, in Seattle, for five years before she moved to Vashon to start Hogsback Organic Farm. Amy, and her husband Joseph, have two children, Leisle and Jeremiah. In addition to raising her children and managing the farm, Amy is currently teaching Horticulture and Math at Vashon High School. Hiking, biking, skiing, and all kinds of. outdoor sports are her passion.

Larry Commeree along with his wife Susan have 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren. A Seattle native, Larry attended Seattle Public Schools and the UW. A 30 year career with General Mills took them to MN, CA and PA where he was an active volunteer along the way: Board member for San Joaquin County (CA) and Cumberland County (PA) United Ways. He and Susan returned to NW in 2002 and specifically chose Vashon for its beauty and rural feel while being so close to Seattle and extended family. For fun you can find the Commerees hanging out with their grandchildren and they hit the road regularly towing their Airstream, particularly on the Olympic Peninsula.

Kim Cunningham has fifteen years experience in the nonprofit sector, focusing on family preservation. For the last four years, she has been a consultant with the Department of Defense, specializing in Child Abuse Prevention for the US Navy. She is currently taking time to raise her two sons and pursue her fantasy of writing for a living.

Bill Dorn, together with his spouse, owns Sound Food Cafe, Bakery & Wine Bar on Vashon. He is a Licensed Psychologist (MN) and had a private practice in Minnesota for many years before moving to Vashon 5 years ago. He also was the Executive Director and lobbyist of the Minnesota Marriage and Family Therapy Association for 5 years. Prior to that he was a Roman Catholic Priest. Bill has served on many boards over the years. He is currently also a member of the board of directors of the Vashon Chamber of Commerce.

John Hopkins has been an Island resident since 1966. He is a retired medical/dental insurance executive. He served as president of the Vashon/Maury Community Council (1980-1981). In 1982 he was appointed to the Board of the Vashon Island School Districted and was elected to a three year term in 1985. He has twice been elected to the Board of Directors of the Vashon Island Golf and Country Club and served as president in 1982. In 2006 John was elected to serve on the Board of the Vashon Community Care Center. He is a member of Rotary. John and his wife, Linda, have five children.

Wendy Kearns is a principal with the law firm of Raskin Snodgrass, where she specializes in technology transactions and intellectual property law. She was formerly at Heller Ehrman LLP and in-house counsel at Microsoft Corporation. In addition to her regular practice, Wendy provides extensive pro bono immigration counsel for indigent individuals through Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and Volunteer Advocates for Immigrant Justice. As part of her immigration work, Wendy has represented unaccompanied minors and has handled dependency matters on their behalf. Wendy is on the board of Creative Preschool on Vashon and serves as its treasurer. Wendy graduated from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1999.


Charley Rosenberry is a lawyer with a private practice on Vashon Island. His practice is primarily dedicated to providing legal services for youth committed to the state of Washington’s Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration (JRA). He is an active member of the Plymouth Congregational Church. He is on the board of Plymouth Housing Group, Board of overseers of Whitman College, and a trustee of the Menninger foundation. Charley coaches the Vashon High School Championship Lacrosse team and loves to hike with his wife, Robin Appleford, their dogs and llamas.

Ashley Plauché enjoys horseback-riding, gardening, painting, skiing and hiking. She has a degree in English Literature from Pepperdine University. Before becoming a mother, she taught seventh-grade Language Arts. She and her husband, Billy, have two sons, Sam and Reed.

Tracy Poole, a native of Charlottesville, VA began her North West adventure with her husband Brent nearly ten years ago. Tracy spent the first half of these years working in Amazon.com’s Human Resources Department. Tracy had always had a passion for helping people and ultimately left Amazon to take on an opportunity to serve with Americorps on the Out of the Rain program at the United Way. Tracy left the program to have her first of two children, the youngest of which is almost a year at this point. Tracy recognized Vashon Island as the perfect place to raise a family and looks forward to continuing work in the non-profit sector. For fun Tracy loves to hike, bike, camp and ski those beautiful mountains!

Tammy Singh grew up in Portland, Oregon. She swam competitively at the Multnomah Athletic Club, on the U.S. Swimming National Team, and later at Stanford University, where she majored in Biological Sciences. While at Stanford she met her engineer husband, Amit, and after a few moves around the San Francisco Bay Area they settled in Sunnyvale while working at a start-up company. In August '06 they moved to Vashon with their two daughters, Kai, who attends Little Tree Montessori, and Lia, who is not yet preschool age. Tammy loves animals and her interests include reading, traveling, gardening, and cooking.

Vashon Youth and Family Services (VYFS) offers a wide range of services including Counseling, Therapeutic Groups, Anger Management Classes, Prevention Services, Life Skills Education, VIVA, JobFind for adults, Parent University, and more!

Some of our programs are especially for families, children, or youth, but most of our programs are open to individual adults, and individuals are welcome to participate. Many of our programs are offered at no charge; others are offered on a sliding scale basis or may be fully covered by Medicaid or partially covered by insurance. With advance notice, we can provide interpreters for sign language, hearing impairment, or non-English speaking clients using our counseling services. We are pleased to be a United Way of King County agency.
